The
second part of tire maintenance you can do yourself is checking your
tire pressure. Underinflated tires waste gas.
Overinflated tires have reduced traction and both pose a threat of a
blowout. A good friend of mine believes the pressure
rating on the tires sidewall is the recommended tire pressure.
I was educated differently. The pressure on the tire
sidewall is the MAXIMUM safe pressure that tire can hold but it is
not necessarily the best pressure for your vehicle. The car's
manufacturer usually prescribes the best tire pressure.
Look for a sticker in the glove box, on the door jamb or a chart in
the owners manual. Generally, most cars need 28 to 32
lbs. An inexpensive pencil type tire guage is adequate for
this purpose and available at most auto
parts stores.
